JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2020 was held on-line from July 12th through 16th, 2020.

“Giant reservoirs of heat/water/material: Global environmental changes driven by the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Ice Sheet” (Giant Reservoirs – Antarctic) hosted the union session U-21 entitled “Frontiers of Antarctic Environmental Research” and the session M-IS15 entitled “Global climate changes driven by the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic ice sheet”.

[U-21]Frontiers of Antarctic Environmental Research

scope:
Antarctica and the Southern Ocean play important roles in the global climate system, with their crucial influences on, e.g., sea level, ocean circulation and heat/carbon storage. They are also the least known components because the precise understanding of the processes requires observations of various interactions, such as those between ocean, ice shelf and ice sheet, in the harshest conditions on the Earth’s surface. Recent advancements in direct and satellite observations and data analyses have suggested significant changes in the Antarctic. However, as the spatial and temporal scales of the changes are diverse (from sub-annual to over millennial), significant challenges remain in their understanding and modeling. 

This session will invite several presentations that address the Antarctic environmental changes in the past, present and potential future, and the importance of interdisciplinary and international observations and modeling for better understanding and projection of the Antarctic and their influences on the global environments.

[MIS-15]Global climate change driven by the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Ice Sheet

scope:
The Southern Ocean and Antarctic ice sheet, which are the giant reservoirs of heat, water, and materials, have a potential to play central roles in long-term global climate change. This system is composed of the following sub-systems; ice shelf which is a place of the interaction of ice sheet and ocean, flowing iceberg, seasonal sea ice zone, Antarctic bottom water which drives the thermohaline circulation, active biological production and Antarctic Circumpolar Current. These sub-systems are interacted with each other and have significant impact on changes in the global environmental system. This session aim to summarize recent observational and simulation studies from various fields relating to the past and present changes in the Antarctic Ice sheet and Southern Ocean, which are essential elements for unraveling the changes in the global climate system. Further, future science plans for understanding of the environmental changes of the Antarctic Cryosphere is also discussed.
